What Happens in the Group

Most people have heard of art therapy and very few know what it is. Our group sessions exist to close that gap. A licensed creative arts therapist walks you through what art therapy is, what a session looks like, what the materials are for, and who it helps. You see real examples of the work, you ask everything you have wanted to ask, and you leave knowing whether it is for you.

You will not be asked to make anything. This is a conversation with a small group of people who are curious about the same thing, held in the room where the work happens.

Not a Support Group, Not an Art Class

People search for "support groups Brooklyn" and "art classes" and land in the same place, so it is worth being clear. A support group is usually peer-led and built around one shared experience. An art class is about the object you leave with. An art therapy group is led by a clinician, uses the process of making as the therapeutic tool, and is confidential in the way therapy is confidential.

Our October sessions are the introduction to all of that. We run them the way we run everything else here: feminist, trauma-informed, evidence-based, and honest about what a room like this can and cannot do. It is not a replacement for individual therapy if that is what you need. It is a real place to start.

Who the Group Is For, and Who It Is Not For

A good fit if you

  • You are curious about art therapy but not ready to commit to weekly individual sessions.
  • You have done talk therapy and felt it stall somewhere words could not reach.
  • You are dealing with anxiety, low mood or burnout and want to understand your options before choosing one.
  • You used to make things, stopped, and miss it more than you admit.
  • You are paying out of pocket and want to see the room and the way we work before you invest in more.

Not the right fit yet if you

  • You are in crisis right now. Please call or text 988, or go to your nearest emergency room.
  • You need ongoing trauma processing. That belongs in individual work, often with EMDR, and we can talk about that instead.
  • You are hoping to make art with feedback on technique. Lovely, but this is not that.
  • You are under 18. Our groups are for adults.

Frequently Asked Questions About Art Therapy Groups

What is an art therapy group?

A small group led by a licensed art therapist. In an ongoing art therapy group, making art is part of the therapy and the group is part of the support. Our October sessions are the introduction: what art therapy is, how a session works, and who it helps, so you can decide with your eyes open.

Do I need to be good at art to join?

No, and you will not be asked to make anything in the October sessions. If you go on to individual or group art therapy, the same answer holds: art therapy is about the process of making, not the object, and nobody is grading anything.

How is a therapy group different from a support group?

Support groups are usually peer-led and organized around a shared experience. A therapy group is led by a clinician and works toward change, using the same clinical training we use in individual sessions. Both have real value. Ours is led by a clinician.

How much does it cost, and do you take insurance?

The October sessions are $75 each, private pay. We do not bill insurance for groups. There is no charge to reserve a spot; Adrienne confirms your place by email and arranges payment from there.

How many people are in a group?

Small enough that everyone gets to ask their questions and hear the answers. If a date fills up, we keep a waitlist and you hear first when the next group opens.

Is there really a discount on individual therapy?

Yes. Everyone who attends a session gets a discounted package on out-of-pocket individual sessions, whether you decide on the day or a few weeks later. Adrienne explains the details at the end of the session. No pressure to use it.

Can I join once a group has already started?

The October sessions are standalone, so each date is its own start. If we move to a longer-running group later, we will close enrollment after the first session to protect the group, and you can join the next round.
